BIOGRAPHY

Vocalist Tena Palmer leaps genres with the greatest of ease, but she’s never more uninhibited and expressive than when she sets off on a free, improvised solo. Squeaks, animal noises and mouth percussion are just part of her unique brand of vocalese.

Petr Cancura is equally adept at coaxing a new language out of his saxophone, so it’s not surprising that he has shared the stage with innovators like Joe Maneri and Cecil McBee.

Guitarist Michael Occhipinti is an innovative composer, the winner of the 2002 National Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year and seven-time JUNO Award nominee.

Pierre-Yves Martel’s combination of early music, re-imaginings of non-jazz composers such as Prokofiev, and improvisation on viola di gamba endow his work with a truly unique sound.

As the leader of Dapp Theory, Andy Milne specializes in fusing jazz with hip-hop.

Isaiah Ceccarelli has established himself as an important percussionist in Montreal, and his compositions reflect his Spanish heritage and love of chamber music.

Benoît Delbecq is an experimental pianist who will not settle for the traditional vocabulary of the instrument. He’s not married to standard keyboards; he also plays the one on his laptop.

Put these seven musicians together to feed off of one-another’s ideas and get ready for a wild ride into uncharted territory. Originally commissioned for 10 minutes of new music, this group of composers arrives to merge their new work with that of their peers, producing a concert as diverse and resonant as the musicians themselves.

Tena Palmer & Bruce Cassidy: AIM Toronto presents the NOW Series

Tune the Living Room - 8 PM

340 Dufferin Street, one block south of Queen,
Toronto
Price: $8.00. 8 PM every second Sunday

On Sunday April 12, the NOW series features:
First set: 8 PM
Tena Palmer, voice
Bruce Cassidy, Electronic Valve Instrument.

Tena and Bruce became friends last year, over the course of a couple of very creatively fulfilling festival concerts with the EAR-CAM ensemble ; FIMA Victoriaville, and the 416 New Music Fest. Discovering a similarity of musical purpose, philosophy, a mutual admiration and delight in collaboration, both Bruce and Tena are excited to indulge in the space and freedom of a duet. Be there! You'll Feel Good!
The Electronic Valve Instrument (EVI) is essentially a synthesizer for a trumpet player. I think that because of its breath control it is the most expressive electronic instrument produced to date. It responds to breath pressure, vibrato, portamento and pitch bend and has a playable range equal to that of the piano. It is capable of producing the sounds of many different instruments via an electronic protocol called MIDI and is also capable of playing complex new sounds even emulating the sound of a full orchestra.

Second set: 9 PM
The ever expanding and compelling sound world of Brilliant Jim Bailey's electronics.

After a four-year holiday from jazz gigs, local saxman and composer Rob Frayne has realized that music is fun. Bringing together some serious musical talent to play and sing, he has selected and written some jazz tunes. He has also taken the liberty to arrange a few Christmas songs.

On this gig, he is reuniting with Chelsea Bridge collaborator and singer Tena Palmer for what promises to be an interesting mix of old and new. New York City jazzmeisters Gordon Webster, on piano, and Petr Cancura, on tenor sax, will anchor the band, while local singer/songwriters Megan Jerome, Shannon Smith, Jeremy Sills as well as singer Martine Courage, along with some of their kids, will round out the band’s festive sounds.

Ho Ho Ho! Some carols will be sung.

Gordon Webster (NYC) piano
Tena Palmer (TO) voice

Jim Vivian - doublebass
Ted Warren - drums

What a hoot! Great crowd!
The most fun was the treat of playing with dear old buddies again!
They're all after me to do more of my originals... so we'll do more next time.
As for me, I was amazed once more at Murley's subtlety as an accompanist....adding tasteful adornment to a song while referring to the lyric. The sound of Ted Warren on the kit... caused several moments of deja vu...and it was such a gas to blow, "with that wind up my skirt" - (if you get my meaning!)
Reg.- never ceasing to surprize and impress, pulled-out a guitar sound from some blacksploitation film soundtrack for Guardian Angel - appropriately shredding the solo. Jim; head-up and on the spot - and such lyrical lines! What a happy bevy of larks!
